Day 3 Mixing
Mixing
It's best to be mixing at least a week after recording. You'll have time to listen to the line mixes and be better prepared to make better choices about how the finished tracks should sound.
Copying
CDR's are burnt for everyone involved with the recording.

To book time, arrange a visit, or discuss a project, please telephone or e-mail. If the answerphone is on it's usually that we're in a session so please leave a message - your call will be returned as quickly!
This example of the recording schedule is based on a line up of: vocals; bass; guitar; drums and keyboards.

Day 1
A lot of the morning will be spent setting up drums, amps and mics. Then it’s all about getting good takes of rhythm tracks.

Drums
Setting up and mic-ing up a drum kit (main live room) takes around 2 hours.
Guitar
The guitar amp is set up in room 2 though the guitarist will usually play from the control room

Bass
We usually get a pretty good bass sound by DI-ing the amp though when the need arises we'll put an extra mic. on the cab.
Keys
Keyboards and synths are DI'd.
Vocals
At this stage – it’s more about getting a good guide vocal down. Singers are recorded from the control room with an SM58. If the performance is outstanding, the quality from these mics is surprisingly good – guide vocals can even end up on the finished track.

Recording
The band gets to play together in the control room – everyone sees everyone (even the drummer is visible in the studio). Though most demos should only have 3 tracks, it’s best to have 4 or 5 ready to record – it's not always clear which the best 3 will be. By the end of day one you will have at least 1 good take of each track.

Day 2
Additional instruments and vocals

Music
Additional keyboards, synths, samples, brass, percussion, solos etc are recorded.
Vocals
The singer is recorded in the studio now with a condenser mic. It’s always worth having time to be sure you get good takes.

Line
mixes
By this stage of the day it’s impossible to get a good mix of anything - everyone’s ears (including the engineers) will be reasonably shot. However it’s good to have a ‘sketch’ of what’s been recorded so line mixes are done of each track and cdr’s made for everyone to take away.
