Lo-Tek Recording Studios Tunbridge Wells

We are a purpose built digital recording facility in The Ashdown Forest. We're located half way between Tunbridge Wells (West Kent) and Crowborough (East Sussex) and record, programme mix and master music. We help record singers, bands, songwriters, musicians, producers, dj's and rappers make high quality recordings of their music.

Why is Lo-tek is a better place to make music? We know how to give your music a truly professional finish. The studio is primarily designed for it's acoustics and practicality but it was also built with artists in mind. The control room and live roo
ms are all visually interesting helping singers and musicians stay focused without feeling the pressure of being in a studio. They are also unusually shaped rooms (eg the control room is a pentagon.

Getting to lo-tek from London (to Tunbridge Wells or Crowborough stations) takes less than an hour. We are only 15 minutes from Tunbridge Wells, 5 minutes from Crowborough and we're less than half an hour from East Grinstead, Tonbridge, Sevenoaks and Uckfield.

Artists get great takes at lo-tek - we have great kit but, more importantly, we have great engineers and a great environment. If you can't be creative at lo-tek....

Tips on visiting recording studios:

Pay us a visit:

Have a good look around. Even if you're not very technical. See if you like the place and whether you think the engineer is on your wavelength. Also see if they have equipment you can borrow/hire (not all studios do, so don't assume anything) and whether or not it's the sort of stuff you want. But don't hand over any money on the spot - go away and think about it first.

If you have a musical friend who you trust and who knows a bit more than you do - take them with you. They'll be in a better position to size up the place and give you some impartial advice.

"The most important bit of equipment in a studio is the engineer. Don't be fooled by lots of flashing lights and big mixers. An experienced engineer in a chocolate-box sized, basic studio can easily get professional quality results while a monkey let loose in Abbey Road will undoubtedly produce rubbish."
Paul White - Editor, 'Sound on Sound'

"When you're locked in the place for a day or two it's important that you're comfortable. Make sure that it's a good, comfortable working environment."
Paul Burns - Studio 64, Middlesbrough

Sound Engineers:

The engineer is a critical part of the recording process so you need to have faith in them. The only way to find this out is to meet them before you book a session. Ask about their taste in music, ask to hear previous recordings they've made. Most of all - use your instinct.

"You probably don't need to ask loads of questions. Normally a gut reaction will tell you within a couple of minutes whether the engineer is the right one for you."
Paul Burns - Studio 64, Middlesbrough

"If you don't like the engineer, it'll colour the whole session. It's always going to make for a better session if there's a friendly atmosphere in the studio and if you feel that they know what they're doing. Demos can be pretty expensive and if the engineer doesn't know what they're doing, you won't get anything out of it."
Guy Massey - Engineer & producer
(Groove Armada, Idlewild, Manic Street Preachers)

Recording equipment at lo-tek recording studios, Tunbridge Wells

Mixing console: Allen & Heath GS300 - 32 channel, 8 bus (plus Soundcraft portable 12 channel 2 bus). This desk actually has 64 inputs so it's unlikely you'll stretch it much. Monitoring is courtesy of Yamaha NS10’s plus Sony 5.1 surround sound and sub woofer. Hardware includes: Apple Mac G5 dual processor, Apple Mac G4, 2 x MOTU digital audio interfaces: (18 audio - digital converters) Further digital I/O is catered for by a pair of Toslink/ADAT lightpipe input and output connectors, which provide eight channels at 44.1kHz and 48kHz. A Fostex hard disc recorder, e-magic midi converter. Logic Pro 6 - the most comprehensive program for professional music and audio production. It contains all Emagic plugins and software instruments, and full TDM integration. Logic gives you more than any package on earth. You don't need more plugins (though you can always add more if you want them) as the emagic stuff is first rate - the best package bundled with any sequencer. Logic Pro 6 is not a lot different than Logic Platinum 6. It looks the same but does feel a little better and on my system it is quite stable.
As one package Logic Pro 6 gives you a massive set of sound generators and processors. Bias, Roxio Toast. outboard Behringer compressors, Behringer noise gates, Akai (S900 MPC 2000) samplers, Roland (S-750) sampler, technics decks plus mixer, sony DAT recorder, Sony Minidisc recorders, Technics cassette recorder microphones include Vocal: Audio Technica, Rode, Octava, Shure.
